No traffic rules observed in city after midnight

KARACHI: As load-shedding of electricity and gas is observed in many areas of the metropolis, traffic signals also turn off after midnight, putting lives of motorists and commuters at risk.

The traffic signals are turned off on many roads after 11:00pm that cause accidents. In developed countries traffic lights work round o clock but in this part of the world they go blank at midnight.

When contacted, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Traffic Karachi, Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh said on Monday that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is responsible for running and maintenance of traffic lights and turning them on and off.

Dr Amir told PPI that traffic policemen, who regulate the traffic flow on city’s roads go off duty after 11:00 PM, but he has directed them if traffic issue occurs on any road during their off time, then they should extend their duty hours to control the traffic.

It has been observed that when clock clicks 12:00AM traffic control system in many areas of Karachi is suspended. After midnight no traffic law is followed in many areas of the metropolis as the traffic police remain absent on the roads to regulate the traffic.

Traffic police say they take strict action against the violators of traffic rules. As many as 69351 vehicles were impounded for violating traffic rules so far this year, according to an official report issued by Traffic Police Department Karachi.

However, no traffic cop is seen on roads after midnight to uphold the traffic rules. The traffic policemen after midnight leave roads, including MA Jinnah Road, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Shahra-e-Quaideen, University Road, Saddar, Prof Ghafoor Road and other arteries.
