Karachi: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui said that the time has gone that people select players without merit as the cricket fans now keenly follow and are equipped with better judgment of the selection criteria.
“The time has gone when people sitting in the AC (air conditioned) rooms of Gaddafi Stadium take the decisions of the team and the people accept their decisions considering them experts,” said Shoaib, who was the chief at a reception ceremony organized in honour of Tapal cricket team, which won Aga Khan Gymkhana Ramazan Cricket Tournament and Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Sarfraz Ahmed, who performed brilliantly in Sri Lanka recently.
Shoaib praised Sarfraz Ahmed for his impressive showings in Sri Lanka recently concluded Test series against the hosts. Sarfraz was the top scorer in the two-match series for Pakistan scoring 265 runs which consists of three fifties and a century.
However, Sarfraz was overlooked for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, which raised many eyebrows. Ironically Pakistan has lost the ODI series 2-1 after batsmen crumpled under pressure in the third and final ODI on Saturday. Pakistan scored a paltry total of 102 runs losing all of their wickets. Sri Lanka easily chased down the target with seven wickets in hand.
“Overlooking Sarfraz for ODI series in spite of his brilliant performance in Test series is a questionable decision by people in Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), who claims that they select players on merit,” Shoaib said.
He added that victory and defeat was part and parcel of competitive game like cricket. “But if team loses due to wrong decisions and lack of professionalism then it is very disturbing for the fans. We have great talent which could easily ensure us a place on victory stand more often.”
Meanwhile, Shoaib lauded the efforts of Tapal Tea Company for establishing a strong cricket team and holding events such as this to encourage the young players.
On the occasion, CEO of Tapal Tea Company, Aftab F. Tapal said that Tapal Tea has always tried its level best to promote sports and encourage players. “We will continue to do this service to the nation in future as well.”
Aftab also praised Sarfraz and said that senior players of national cricket team should learn from him and the juniors should follow in his footsteps. Tapal Cricket Club President Asif Azeem appreciated Aftab Tapal keen interest in cricket activities and his support encourage players greatly. At the end of the ceremony, Shoaib and Aftab extended a cheque of Rs 100,000 to Sarfraz for his heroics in Sri Lanka. They also gave cash prizes and trophies to Tapal Cricket Club cricketers and officials.
