Pakistan ranks 5th amongst 22 highest TB burden countries

KARACHI: Pakistan ranks 5th amongst 22 highest TB burden countries and 4th highest amongst Drug Resistant TB, globally. According to an estimate, 4,20,000 new cases occurs every year in the country and out of them only 0.3 million receive treatment. Moreover, 60,000 deaths occur due to TB in Pakistan every year.

TB is a curable disease, and its early detection and treatment can save the life of TB patient. Incomplete treatment of TB makes it most dangerous, turning it into MDR TB.

Dow University is providing free of cost treatment to all TB and MDR TB patients. There is need to create mass awareness in order to reduce this ailment from our country.

These views were expressed by experts including Prof Mohammad Masroor, Prof Iqbal Pirzada, Dr Iqtedar Ahmed, Dr Ismat Ara during a seminar and an awareness walk, organized by Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) was to celebrate the World TB Day 2015 on Thursday at Ojha Campus.

The awareness walk was led Prof Masroor, Director, Ojha Institute of Chest Disease (OICD) DUHS and was accompanied by senior faculty members of DUHS beside eminent personalities, doctors, paramedical and administrative staff, students and TB patients. The walk started from Ojha Institute of Chest Disease and ended up at Dow International Medical College.

The participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans to improve public awareness about TB.

Speaking on the occasion experts stressed to have counseling sessions for TB patients in order to minimize the burden of TB. They said that it is our responsibility to tell people about prevention, diagnosis and treatment of TB.

Prof Iqbal Pirzada informed that globally 13,000 MDR cases occur every year and 0.3 million cases are missed every year. In Sindh, there are 1,70,000 patients and out of them only 60,000 receive treatment.

Prof Masroor informed that Dow University is providing free of cost treatment to all TB and MDR TB patients. The existing facilities for the diagnosis, management and treatment of tuberculosis have been greatly expanded. Patients from all over Pakistan come here and get treated free of cost.
