Karachi: “Pakistan will host the 48th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) from July 20-29, 2016 at the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK).
Around 300 young chemists and 150 experts from almost 75 countries are expected to participate in this global chemistry competition. The competition will jointly be hosted by ICCBS-UoK and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan.”
Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, President IChO 2016 and former Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC), stated this while speaking at a press conference held at the Meeting Room of H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi (UoK) here on Monday.
Director ICCBS-UoK Prof. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Chaudhary and the leaders of Pakistani national chemistry Olympiad team, including Coordinator to National Chemistry Talent Contest Prof Dr Khalid M. Khan and Dr. M Raza Shah of the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry also addressed the conference.
Dr. Atta said that the organisation of this prestigious global event in the country was really an honour for the nation. He said that the HEC, under his tenure, started sending university students abroad for PhD programme. Similarly, the HEC introduced the International Science Olympiad for the students of schools and colleges in Pakistan, which was new in Pakistan, while the Chemistry Olympiad is the part of the Science Olympiad, he added.
“International delegates will stay at ICCBS, UoK, where state-of-the-art research facilities and accommodations are available. The centre owns 17 research buildings where around 500 PhD scholars are being trained under the qualified and experienced scientists. This event will give the good name to the county at the international level. The global competition will be held under fool proof security,” he said.
Talking about the significance of science and knowledge, he said that science played a fundamental role in the human progress and would acquire more global importance in future. Scientific knowledge is an important part of our development and an essential factor in improving the life style of human being, he added.
Knowledge is the only way for Pakistan for making progress, he observed.
Dr. Iqbal Chaudhary informed the media persons that HEC agreed to support ICCBS for the organisation of this international programme. The organisation of this significant event may help every Pakistani to remove wrong and negative conceptions about Pakistan worldwide, he said and added that this would be highlighted in the history of Pakistan.
Prof Dr Khalid M. Khan and Dr. M Raza Shah told media about the activities to be held in the upcoming global competition. They said that the 10 days will be full of scientific events in which around 300 students will be examined in various kinds of sessions.
“The Olympiad is carried out in the spirit of friendship, tolerance, where the competition is a stimulus for showing the participant`s capabilities but contacts, exchange of ideas and collaboration between students, teachers and scientists from various countries have a primary importance. Pakistan obtained full membership of the chemistry Olympiad in 2005 in Taiwan,” they said.
It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistani students have recently won two Bronze Medals in 47th International Chemistry Olympiad held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
