Patients suffer as doctors, paramedics go on strike

KARACHI: Joint Action Committee of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and National Institute of Child Health on Monday observed strike against non-approval of health allowance and their other demands. As a result, thousands of visiting patients suffered a lot as a as OPDs services of both institutions remained suspended.

The committee comprised of paramedics and young doctors observed a complete strike against non-acceptance their demands. The protesters also staged a protest demonstration and sit-in outside the Najmuddin Auditorium of JPMC. They were led by Gul Saeed Khan, Dr Yaseen, Syed Ameer Hussain Shah, Dr Usman, Ismail Jiskani, Abdul Wahid, Faisal Chaudhary, Irshad Arian, Abdul Qadeer, Ghazi Jan and others.

The protesters said a large number of employees is not being paid health allowance since 2012. They neurosurgery department employees are waiting their regularization. They said young doctors are receiving fewer salaries as compared to salaries being paid in three other provinces. They said a health allowance summery has not been approved by the chief minister Sindh yet despite lapse of seven months.

On the other hand, Secretary Health Dr Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo, Joint Executive Director JPMC Dr Seemin Jamali and Executive Director JPMC Prof Anis Bhatti held meeting with joint action committee members and asked them to end their protest but they refused to do so till acceptance of their demands.

Media Coordinator, Joint Action Committee, Ismail Jiskani said protest demonstration and sit-in will continue till acceptance of their genuine demands.

More than 7,000 patients visit OPDs of both healthcare centres every day and strike increased miseries of these poor patients. The worst sufferers were the patients who had come from different rural areas of Sindh and other parts of the country.
