Islamabad: Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) has decided to immediately suspend the license Geo News channel for a period of 15 days besides imposing a fine of Rs. 10 million, to be paid before the expiry of the suspension period.
According to a press release in case of non-payment of fine, the suspension of the license shall continue. The Authority further decided that in case of repeated violation by the said licensee, proceedings for the revocation of the license shall be initiated.
The 96th Authority Meeting of PEMRA was on Friday at PEMRA Headquarters Islamabad at 9:45am. The meeting was convened by the newly appointed Chairman PEMRA Mr. Muhammad Parvez Rathore under Rule 3(4) of PEMRA Rules 2009. Besides other agenda items, the complaint filed by Ministry of Defence against GEO News was deliberated upon in light of the legal opinion of the Ministry of Law.
The Authority, after thread-bare discussion while considering all the relevant provisions of PEMRA laws, took a strong notice of violations committed by GEO News and unanimously decided to immediately suspend the license. All field offices of PEMRA have been directed to implement the decision of the Authority in letter and spirit with immediate effect.
