KARACHI: Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) on Wednesday was deeply concerned about the swine flu issue and feels that we as a nation are not prepared to face this problem if in case comes to Pakistan.
According to PMA press release, swine flu is spreading like an epidemic in the neighboring country these days and taken more than 1700 lives and more than 30,000 people got the viral diseases. Swine Flu is caused by strain of virus called H1N1.
Initially this virus was discovered from pigs and is transmitted to the human beings and this become a human virus which is contagious in nature and spreads through droplets like coughing, sneezing and using infected towels and handkerchief. Since there is a lot of traveling from Pakistan and India, to and fro, there is great risk of transfer of the diseases to our country.
It seems that our government and the health administrator are totally unaware of this looming disaster. We as a country are a habit of ignoring these kinds of things at first till they knock our doors. There seems to be no preventive measure taken in this regard. We do not have enough capacity for diagnoses of this virus. As the symptom of this virus are like the symptoms of an ordinary flu. But if these symptoms persist for more than 5 to 7 days and get other complications, then there must be a proper diagnoses to exclude the swine flu.
PMA is deeply concerned about the swine flu issue and feels that we as a nation are not prepared to face this problem if in case comes to our country.
PMA demanded from the government to launch an awareness campaign through print and electronic media, establishment of the laboratories where the diagnoses for the swine flu could be made at affordable prices, availability of the drug and vaccination against the virus.
Above all there must be a counter at all airports and dry ports to check the passengers coming from the neighboring country for flu like symptoms. If someone is found with these symptoms, then tey should immediately be checked for swine flu before he enters the country and becomes a source of spread.
