President: (President urges govt to launch more socio-economic welfare programmes)

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain has urged the government to launch more socio-economic welfare programmes like Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) for the uplift of deserving people.

He was addressing the launching of first ever evaluation report of BISP launched here on Thursday. He said this program has truly become a pride of Pakistan as it has emerged as largest social safety net initiative in South Asia and one of the largest around the world.

The President said it is the responsibility of the state to ensure social and economic wellbeing of the people without any discrimination.

Earlier in her welcome address BISP chairperson Marvi Memon said the report indicates that twenty two percent decline in poverty has been witnessed due to this programme.

She said regular financial support is being provided to five million deserving women. She said the programme has been resulted in fulfilling basic needs of deserving people particularly the women who have been able to improve their life standard. She said the programme is basically aimed at empowering women in real term and make them useful citizens.
