Public library in Kohat established

Peshawar: Importance of libraries is an admitted fact and no one can deny its importance. The library is the centrepiece of our community and accessible to each and everyone. The resources provided by libraries inspire interests of all ages, which is why it is imperative that libraries not only continue to be preserved, but also continue to thrive and grow.

The PTI-led provincial government, where it actively engaged in bringing change in all sectors, is also making strenuous efforts to keep alive the rapidly dying culture of book reading in the province by establishing libraries in each district. Mostly students will be the main beneficiary of libraries side by side the general public. Moreover, libraries can play a key role in defeating the negative thinking prevailing in the youth due to existing terrorism and extremism.

The provincial government’s decision of establishment of public library at district level is commendable step and it must be implemented in letter and spirit. The newly established public library in KDA Kohat is part of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s program of establishment of public library at district level.

The new building of Public Library has been constructed at a cost of Rs.53 Million on 7.25 Kanal in posh area of Kohat. Final completion date of the said library was June 2015 but due to some additional work, it not yet handed over to the Archives Department Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Necessary books, furniture and other accessories have already been purchased for library.

Books for students of college and university level will also be available in the library. Similarly facilities of digital library will also be provided in it in future. A big Hall of 200 seats has also been constructed in it for promotion of cultural activities

It is to be mentioned here that there was already historical Jinnah Library in the heart of Kohat city but it can’t cater the needs of present era. After devolution of powers in 2002, Jinnah Library was handed over to the District Government and shifted to Commissioner House Kohat.

Multi-purpose Commercial Plaza was constructed on the site of Jinnah Library. However, after revival of the posts of Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, it was re-shifted to Bacha Khan Library Kohat.

The newly established public library in KDA will be opened for general public very soon.
