Rana Mujahid sacked as Shahbaz Sr. appointed as PHF secretary

Karachi: Former Pakistan captain and recipient of Hilal Imtiaz, Shahbaz Ahmad Senior has taken over as the new secretary Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) after sitting secretary Rana Mujahid resigned from the post Wednesday.

Rana Mujahid tendered his resignation, saying that he wanted to give newly elected president PHF Brig (rtd) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar the opportunity to appoint his own team.

“I have submitted my resign with newly elected president. Since my President Ch. Akhtar Rasool has already resigned, I think it is time for me to say goodbye,” Mujahid was quoted as saying by PHF media release.

However, according to reports, Mujahid initially declined to resign but was threatened that an inquiry would be initiated against him for apparent embezzlement of PHF funds during his stint as secretary.

The newly appointed Shahbaz Senior hoped that his association as the longest serving captain of the national team and his PIA country head job in Saudi Arabia would help raise the standard and image of the game of hockey.

“I am sure with the help and coordination of all the stakeholders, I would be in a position to make the difference as hockey secretary.”

President PHF has also announced the appointment of Rashid Junior as chief selector and Tahir Zaman as head coach of national junior team.

Former great Hasan Sardar was appointed as PHF President advisor in place of Shahbaz. Mohammad Ikhlaq Usmani was named as treasurer in place of Shahid Ali Khan who also resigned from the post.

The newly appointed selection committee consists of Rashid Junior (Chief selector), Saeed Khan, Farhat Khan, Shahbaz Junior and Waseem Feroz.

Meanwhile, junior team management consists of Tahir Zaman (Head Coach), Zeeshan Ashraf (Assistant Coach) and Mohammad Irfan (Assistant Coach).

President PHF also announced that the junior training camp for Johar Baru Invitational Hockey Tournament will get under way from September 4. The one-month camp will be staged at the PSB vicinity. The PSB hockey turf and Army sports board turf will be used for training. The team will reside at the PSB hostel.
