Resumption of CNG bus service soon

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Transport and Communication Department Chief, Mohammad Athar, on Tuesday said that it would take one more month to bring 36 out of 73 CNG buses on roads.

Sindh Minister for Information and Local Bodies Sharjeel Inam Memon had assured to bring the buses on roads within one month in April and directed KMC Administrator Rauf Aktar Farooqui to expedite repairing process of the buses stationed at Surjani bus terminal since 2013.

The Green Bus Service was initiated in 2005, by the then-mayor of Karachi, Niamatullah Khan. The service operated till 2007 after which it was suspended for some time. In 2009, Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad resumed the service but it was terminated once again on April 23, 2013. At that time, the service used to operate on three major routes – from Surjani Town to Safoora Goth, from Surjani Town to Korangi and from Orangi Town to Malir.

Taking to PPI, Athar said that 36 buses had been repaired, which were ready to bring them on roads but the delay was caused due to tenders given for operators who would run these buses on roads.

“The tyres of the buses were expired while their batteries were stolen due to their long stay at Surjani terminal but after issuance of Rs 40 million from Sindh government, new tyres and batteries have been fitted and 36 buses were ready to come on roads,” he said.

Athar said that these buses would be run by contractors, who would then hire their drivers and conductors. “We have received bids from different contractors but the due process will take one more month to operate the bus service.”

He said that fares of the buses were not yet decided and the decision would be taken after consultation between government and successful bidder.
