Senate: (Committee formed for discussion on revival of student unions)

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Chairman Mian Raza Rabbani has constituted a committee of the Upper House for discussion on revival of student unions.

In its ruling in the Senate session on Monday, the chair said bans on student unions were imposed by the martial law administrators in violation of article 8 e of the Constitution.

He said the constitution allows every citizen the right to form an association or union. Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq, on a motion moved by Rubina Khalid, said he fully supports the restoration of student unions in the education institutions.

He, however, said that there is need to further improve their system after bringing the necessary rules and laws. Earlier, the members called for lifting of ban on student unions.

They said forming unions is a democratic and constitutional right and the student unions are nursery for the future leadership. Those who spoke on the motion included Mushahid Hussain Syed, Abdul Qayyum, Saeed Ghani, Nihal Hashmi, Ahmad Hassan, Tahir Hussain Mashhadi. Mir Kabir, Shibli Faraz, Mushahidullah Khan, Khushbakht Shujaat and others.
