SHC issues notices on petition to ban firecrackers

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday issued a notice to chief secretary Sindh, home secretary, provincial police chief and other official respondents to submit their respective replies on a petition seeking to ban manufacture and sale of firecrackers throughout the province on the event of Shab-e-Baraat.

Two-judge bench headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi directed head of Memon Goth police station to submit a report with regard to incident in which six labourers including three children reportedly died when firecracker exploded in a firecracker factory located in Memon Goth.

In the petition filed by Rana Faizul Hassan, secretary general of non-profit organization, United Human Rights Commission, the court was pleaded to order authorities to place ban on manufacturing and selling of fireworks ahead of the Shab-e-Baraat.

The petitioner said that religious event, Shab-i-Baraat, was nearing but the authorities concerned still have not placed ban on manufacturing and selling of fireworks throughout the province.

Citing Memon Goth incident he told the court that at least six labourers including three children were reported to be dead when firecracker exploded in the firecracker factory.

Use of firecrackers causes a lot of problems for citizens and play havoc with their lives, he added while requesting court to issue directions for placing ban on such harmful items.
