KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday ordered head of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and District Municipal Corporations (DMCs) to make payment of advance salaries to the employees belonging to Hindu community before Deewali festival.
Headed by Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi, a division bench also directed them to submit a report on compliance of its order within three days.
The bench was seized with the hearing of petition against non-payment of salaries to employees of KMC and DMCs.
An official of finance department submitted a report in court, stating that an amount for payment of advance salaries to the employees belonging to Hindu community in terms of SHC’s earlier order had already been deposited by finance department on September 23 into the accounts of KMC and DMCs.
Additional secretary finance department also filed comments which were taken on record by the court. In comments, he said, finance department released amount of Rs326.958 million under Octori Zilla Tax (OZT) share. In addition to this, the provincial government taking into consideration of complex issues of KMC more funds of Rs500 million as Grant-in-aid was also being released regularly on monthly basis to KMC to ease its financial problems regarding payment of the salaries and pensions etc.
He said that a total amount of OZT share and Grant-in-aid for the financial year 2013-14 comes to Rs10, 868. 496 million was released to the KMC and Rs8,124.179 million to the DMCs. During the financial year 2014-15 Rs3,354.625 million released to the KMC and Rs2,633.303 million to the DMCs of Karachi.
The court directed secretary local government to comply with its earlier order that directed him to convene a meeting of all stakeholders to resolve funds controversy between provincial government and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) so that salaries could be paid to KMC and District Municipal Corporation (DMC) employees.
