KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has directed the federal law officer to file comments on behalf of the secretary defense and respondent army officers on a petition calling for release of an ex-Sepoy, who was court-martialed for desertion and espionage.
A division bench of SHC was hearing a petition filed by Ms Jama, who moved the court seeking release of her spouse Mohammad Suleman.
Counsel for the petitioner submitted that Suleman, ex-Sepoy of Sindh Regiment, was arrested from Chhor, Umkerkot in December, 2009 and court-martialed for deserting the service, communicating information and sketches and departing the country without passport. He was sentenced to five-year imprisonment.
The counsel said petitioner’s spouse was still behind the bars since he had served his sentence. He told the judges that before the pronouncement of the verdict regarding his conviction, Suleman was also detained for over five-month period at unknown place.
The petitioner’s spouse was entitled to be released, he argued while requesting the court to order Karachi prison authorities to release him.
The hearing was adjourned till date to pronounced later by court office.
