SHC seeks report about internment centers

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday sought a report from the interior ministry, outlining the internment centers that come under administrative command of defence ministry or any other department.

A division bench headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh was hearing a petition filed by Saifullah, who moved the court seeking recovery of his son, Hafiz Ehsanullah.

The petitioner alleged that his son was taken away by law enforcers from the Gulberg area on September 26, 2012 and since then he was missing.

During earlier hearing, the court had issued a notice to the interior secretary to verify whether the missing man is in any internment centre in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa.

Following the court notice, Laiq Daraz, a section officer of interior ministry turned up before court, stating that some of the internment centers are under administrative control of the defence ministry while some are controlled by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s home department. The court directed him to file statement containing comprehensive list of internment centers which fall under administrative control of defence ministry or any other department before this court within two weeks.

Meanwhile, the court directed authorities of Khyber Pakhtunkhawa to ensure that no obstruction is created as and when family member of an internee, Muhammad Ramzan, who was kept in internment centre of Lakki Marwat meets with him.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Fatima, who moved the court seeking recovery of her spouse from unlawful detention by law enforcers.

Counsel for the petitioner told the judges that pursuant to the court order, petitioner and his family travelled to the Lakki Marwat, to meet with the internee but they were not allowed to meet him.
