SHC summons road project director to explain causes of delay

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued notice to the director of the project of 150-kilometer-long Nawabshah-Ranipur road to appear in court and explain delays caused in the completion of the project.

A division bench headed by Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh was hearing a petition filed Ahmed Ali Wasan, a resident of Kot Diji, Khairpur, who sought court directives for completion the road project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Counsel for petitioner submitted that the work on the project had been stopped by the provincial authorities for a long time.

Over 10 million people of three districts — Nawabshah, Naushahro Feroze and Khairpur Mirus — and upper Sindh would have benefitted from the road project, he said adding after completion of the project, it would have opened new avenues of education to the youth. Besides, he said, the opportunities of treatment of patients in various hospitals and medical colleges of the area would have been available at hand.

Counsel said that the funds for the Rs2.4bn project, launched in October 2004, were provided by the ADB as a loan on execution of an agreement between the bank and the provincial government.

He said that only a very small portion of the road, out of the total length of about 150 kilometers, was completed so far, although the project was to be completed within 30 months.

The court was pleaded to direct the appropriate agencies to undertake an investigation into the delay caused in completion of the project and also ascertain why the work on the project was given up. Hearing of case was adjourned till November 12.
