Sindh Govt Qatar Hospital faces doctors’ shortage

KARACHI: Medical Superintendent, Sindh Government Qatar Hospital, Orangi Town, Dr Syed Khalid Masood on Tuesday said the hospital urgently needs 16 Medical Officers and 12 Women Medical Officers to improve patient care.

Talking to PPI, Dr Khalid said that the number of visiting patients has been increasedng day by day in 410-beded hospital and around 3,000 to 3,500 patients visit OPDs in the hospital on daily basis. He said about 28 general doctors’ posts are lying vacant in the hospital including 16 males and 12 females. He said the posts of specialist doctors, including neurosurgeon, nephrologist, pediatric consultant, ENT consultant, plastic surgeon, neurologist and radiologist, are also lying vacant in hospital. The hospital administration has been facing acute shortage of anesthesiologists as six posts are lying vacant.

He informed that 107 nurses posts had been sanctioned for hospital but 72 nurses are available in the hospital for three shifts, while 35 seats are lying vacant in healthcare. Dr Masood said hospital offers all major OPDs services, including gynecology, orthopedic, ENT, cardiac emergency, emergency care, blood bank and other diagnostics facilities, to residents of Orangi Town and other neighboring localities free of cost.

He said around 800 to 900 patients are brought in hospital’s emergency department daily basis. He said that currently, 175 doctors are performing their duties at the hospital but institution urgently needs general doctors to improve patient care at healthcare. He informed that Qatar Hospital was declared a teaching hospital few years ago and affiliated with Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Karachi, but unfortunately, this teaching hospital status is yet to be implemented in letter and spirit.
