KARACHI: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Muhammad Farooq Awan on Friday claimed to have arrested one extortionist from Korangi.
Addressing a press conference in his office, he said on a tip-off, SIU police arrested an extortionist Sohail Ahmed alias Zubairi, from Korangi area of the city. SSP said that the accused was an employee in an insurance company and he used data of life insurance policy holders for demanding extortion.
Awan said that accused got knowledge of such criminal activities from a TV show “Bhatta” and started extortion from the data of policy holders. He said that the arrested extortionist confessed that he had collected extortion from several bankers, factory owners, school owners and businessmen.
SSP said that 19 applications and three cases had also registered against him in different police stations of the city. He said that accused used collect data of policy holders and send them extortion letters through post office. He said that accused also used to contact his victims via mobile-phone and short message service (SMS) after sending them letters.
He said that one pistol with bullets, unregistered subscriber identity module (SIMs), data of insurance policy holders and extortion letters were recovered from his possession.
