SIALKOT: Scores of the paddy growers and small farmers Saturday staged a protest demonstration in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial , Pasrur, Badiana , Chawinda and surrounding areas against the low prices of paddy drops , what they called `exploitation` through low price of paddy, and demanded of the federal government to honour its commitment for the well-being of farmers.
They blocked the local roads to lodge their strong protest for an hour and they chanted slogans against the government for not starting the purchase of paddy yet. They claimed price of the crop was as low as Rs1,200 per maund in the market whereas sugar mill owners had not paid dues to cane growers for the previous year.
While addressing the protesting paddy growers, the local Kissan representatives including Ghulam Hussain, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Iqbal, Allah Rakha, Bashir Ahmed and the others said that the Pakistan Agriculture Storage And Service Corporation Limited (Pasco) had not even started purchasing the paddy as yet, they added.
They said the hard work of a farmer in growing the crop was going to waste as they were not being rewarded for their labour and investment. They also said the crushing season of cane growers had not started yet while they were yet to be paid outstanding dues of the last year.
