Sobhrja Hospital braves shortage of medicines

KARACHI: Sobhraj Maternity Hospital has been facing acute shortage of medicines for several months due to which patients are forced to purchase medicines from private medical stores.

Sindh’s largest maternity healthcare center being run under Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has been facing acute shortage of medicines and the authorities concerned are not paying attention to solve this issue.

A senior official of hospital on condition of anonymity said the shortage of medicine has badly affected the performance Sindh’s largest maternity hospital. He said the hospital was up-graded in 2002 to provide maternal treatment facilities women; however, the KMC administration could not provide drugs to hospital due to its financial crisis.

The shortage of medicines in hospital has compelled patients to purchase expensive medicines from private medical stores that puts extra burden on the pockets of poor and low income patients.

The official said over 400 patients visit the hospital daily in different Outpatients Departments (OPDs).

He said maternity medical treatment is very costly in private facilities and government-run hospitals provide free of cost medical facilities to poor segments of society. He said patients are forced to by costly medicines from private medical store prescribe by doctors.

He said higher authorities of KMC have failed to provide the medicines to hospital as per requirement and the health delivery system has badly affected.

Deputy Medical Superintendent, Sobhraj Maternity Hospital, Dr Mumtaz Bashir was not available for comment.
