Sports activities to be boosted in city

KARACHI: A meeting of Karachi Divisional Sports Committee under the chairmanship of Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui on Thursday decided that the sports activities should be boosted in the city so that youth of Karachi could get more chances for playing games and the city could be made centre of sports.

Siddiqui said all the deputy commissioners should focus on promoting sports in their respective districts. The relations between sports organizations and institutes should be strengthened. The efforts in promoting sports in schools should be made effective.

He said DC South Football Tournament and Commissioner Karachi Interclub Hockey Tournament would be held next month. The hockey tournament would be held in the second week of May in cooperation with Deputy Commissioner Central Karachi Hockey Association. 32 teams would participate in the 10-day tournament which would be played on Dr Muhammad Ali Shah Hockey Academy Astroturf. Initial arrangements in this regard were completed.

The meeting decided that playgrounds of schools should be enhanced for children. A committee was also made in the meeting which would improve playgrounds and the road adjacent to schools.

Representatives of Inter Board Karachi told the meeting about details of table tennis, badminton and hockey tournaments of boys and girls.

Arshad Jamal of United Football Club told that 1200 children were being trained in eight areas of the city including Lyari, Malir, Korangi, Old Golimar, Mauripur Road, Baldia Town, Agra Taj Colony and Manghopir.

Director Local Government Rubina Asif, all additional deputy commissioners, representatives of trade associations, department of health, officers of Matric and intermediate educational boards, Gulzar Feroze, Mubeen Peerzada, Asghar Baloch and others were also present on the occasion.
