Karachi: Rahmat Ali spun Mirpurkhas Veterans to an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Nawabshah Veterans in the latest match of the 17th National Seniors Cup Cricket Tournament 2015 held at Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad.
It was second successive victory to be registered by Mirpurkhas Veterans, who had earlier overwhelmed Sanghar Veterans by seven wickets at the same venue.
A record number of 109 teams from all over the country have entered the annual tournament, being organized by the Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA), and sponsored by IMI Omar (Pvt) Ltd and Arif Habib Group.
Batting first, after winning the toss, Nawabshah Veterans did well to bring up 50 of their innings for the loss of only one wicket as opener Nasir Khan (29 off 39 balls) and Mohammad Yameen (26 off 40 balls) set a solid platform.
But they lost their way with the introduction of spin with the trio of Rahmat Ali (4-18), Sharifuddin (3-20) and Zafaruddin (2-17) caused a dramatic collapse to send them tumbling to 108 all out in 25 overs with the last seven wickets going down for only 17 runs.
Set to score 109 in 25 overs, Mirpurkhas Veterans lost both the openers, Anwar-ul-Haq and Abdul Rahim, with 43 runs on the board. They moved swiftly towards the target with some aggressive batting by Sharifuddin and Kashif Abbas, who added 65 for their unbroken third wicket, stand in rapid time.
Sharifuddin remained undefeated with 54 off 37 balls with the help of three sixes and five fours while Kashif Abbas returned unconquered on 25 off 15 balls, hitting five boundaries. Their brilliant knocks enabled Mirpurkhas Veterans to overhaul the target in just 16 overs. The Man of the Match award, however, was clinched by Rahmat Ali for his four-wicket haul.
