Karachi: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation-run Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) has started a rare telephone follow-up service Smart Drug & Poison Information Centre, to raise awareness among citizens about consumptions of medicines.
It was revealed through telephone follow-up calls that about 350 patients with cardiovascular diseases visited in Outpatient Department (OPD) of Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD) in month of August 2014. Thirteen percent patients could not afford the medicines due to poverty and if they purchased drugs, then left these drugs after 10-15 days later.
It further revealed that 18 percent patients were unable to use all prescribed medicines and only few consumed drug over poverty issues. It was also learned through telephone follow-up that 29 percent patients forget to take medicines of blood pressure on time which caused further complications.
The 36 percent patients faced drug related side-effects and 80 percent patients showed satisfaction in medicines prescribed by government run hospital doctors.
Smart Drug & Poison Information Centre facility is available 24 hours for citizens and they may consult pharmacists awareness counter after OPD checkup from doctors.
