Transporters warned against overcharging of fares

KARACHI: Stern action will be taken against public transporters who are involved in overcharging commuters, particularly students and special persons using public transportation for daily commuting in the metropolis, said DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh.

Talking to PPI, DIG Amir showed concern over the mafia sitting in Karachi public transport as they are not willing to absorb better reforms in the traffic system that are being brought by Karachi Traffic Police for benefiting the public in the city.

Amir said they had already written an official letter to Karachi’s Commissioner and Sindh Transport Department for reviewing fare for students from Rs 0.25 paisa to Rs 5 as the previous amount is too low which is not payable. He said in the same letter, they had further suggested that the special persons, particularly a blind person, should be allowed to travel free of charge as he is unable to recognize or count the money while exchanging with conductor when he is alone.

DIG said they want full cooperation from relevant departments with the Karachi Traffic Police Department for implementing fare list in the Karachi public transport. He said they had requested Sind Transport Department for issuance of new fare list so that students could be facilitated in the city.

He warned transporters not to overcharge students and other commuters, otherwise stern action would be taken against them.
