LARKANA: An under-trial prisoner (UTP) has been detected with HIV positive. He is admitted to the Chandka Medical College Hospital’s the UTP Ward since November 13, 2015 for treatment of his orthopaedic ailments.
He is facing trial under section 324, 353, 427, 147 & 148 PPC of Khanpur Mahar police station FIR. His name is Lohar Ahmed, 35, son of Mohammad Malook Gadhani, and is resident of Ghotki district. He is on Higher Anti-Retro-viral Therapy (HAART) medicine.
He has been suggested to get his viral load test at HIV/AIDS Laboratory, Civil Hospital, Karachi by the HIV/AIDS Treatment & Care Centre, Larkana, on January 11 as blood sample through courier is not acceptable and it is mandatory for the patient to go to HIV/AIDS Laboratory personally for which test proforma has already been handed over to the UTP Ward Incharge for onward transmission to the concerned prison authorities.
It must be mentioned here that over 1034 registered HIV/AIDS positive patients of Larkana have to travel to Karachi for this vital test after every six months to access whether the drugs prescribed are proper or they require change. Despite commitment made by the Provincial Chief of the HIV/AIDS Program, Dr. Younis Chachar, this viral load test facility has not yet been provided in Larkana due to which many patients leave treatment in mid and default.
It is the need of the hour that the Sindh government comes to the rescue of these poor people without loss of time. HIV positive patient Mohammad Suleman has said that the Sindh government was spending billions of rupees for treatment of Hepatitis and other deadly viral diseases.
