LARKANA: An awareness walk was organized here on Tuesday to mark the World Heart Day. It was participated by Benazir Bhutto Medical University Vice Chancellor Prof Asghar Channa, Commissioner Ghulam Akbar Laghari, Chandka Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Ghulam Murtaza Soomro, other doctors, paramedics and general public.
The walk started from Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and terminated at Larkana Press Club where a camp was also organized for conducting tests of blood sugar, serum cholesterol, body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure. A total of 110 tests were conducted at the camp out of which 30% were detected with high cholesterol, 12 new patients of diabetes were also found along with 27 new cases of hypertension.
The commissioner Laghari was informed by the incharge of CCU Prof Bashir Shaikh that they urgently need Cath Lab for which he assured that the same will start functioning by June 2016.
It must be mentioned here that 55-bed capacity CCU of Chandka Medical College Hospital is running without proper Head of Department of Cardiology since past three months and Prof Bashir Shaikh of Medicine Department Unit-III has been temporarily appointed its head after media reports.
BBMU authorities recently approved recruitment of 39 professors and others including Dr. Rajesh Kumar as Assistant Professor of Cardiology and Dr Fayyaz Mujtaba Shah as Senior Registrar but their offer orders were withheld on the pretext of ban imposed by Sindh Government on fresh appointments which in fact does not apply to universities as other alma maters are making fresh appointments to fill their vacant faculties. But situation has now changed and Sindh Chief Minister has verbally asked VC to issue orders and Education & Information Minister Nisar Khuhro was expected to distribute the same on Tuesday evening.
Cardiologist Dr. Ashok Muar said that among the major causes of hypertension is smoking, alcohol and kidney diseases which ultimately lead to heart failure. They further said that hypertension is caused due to severe tensionized, unsocialized and unsecured life for which preventive measures be adopted.
