“Why no arrest made during action against illegal hydrants?”

KARACHI: All Karachi Water Tankers Ittehad chairman Mohammad Riaz Balouch said on Tuesday that they work hard day and night to provide water to factories and houses in the city but due to some water theft mafia elements are involved in the their profession who have become the source of disgrace for them. He said they are just transporters and work like common labor.

In a press conference held at Karachi Press Club, he said some apple of eye with collusion of KWSB had been occupied on hydrants without advertising tenders in any newspaper and their tender periods automatically extended internally without notification.

Balouch said ironically that they are charged extra payment for filling water which being a cause to recover extra money from common people. He said recently local government held a big operation against illegal hydrants and demolished some of them which were being cause of huge loss to government but despite of that no any arrest was made and no culprit punished. He said had KWSB fulfilled its responsibility some improvement could have been made.

He said his union’s delegations met with Commissioner Karachi to discuss the issues but no adequate result had come out.

He suggested that like other departments, if KWSB is privatized than it would become profitable institute and provide better relief to people.

Demanding to Sindh government, he said water hydrants should be handed over to rangers, all the corrupt mafias should be make public, the numbering systems should be restored on all the hydrants, contractor system should be eliminated, issue NoC to new and closed boring hydrants immediately, reducing filling rates as people to provided water on cheapest rates.

He said if their demands could not be fulfilled within 10 days, they would announce next course of action.
