Work on Gujjar Nullah kyboshed

KARACHI: The Sindh government has switched its priorities as local government elections get closer. Hence, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has stopped funding for removing encroachments from Gujjar Nullah.

A high official of Anti-Encroachments Department told funding for the anti-encroachments work on Gujjar Nullah, one of the few major nullahs in the city, had been stopped ten days before Eid.

“Resultantly, the work had to be halted,” he said. “It is like disease. It will re-emerge, if you will not completely uproot it.”

When there was will, the anti-encroachment operation was sputtered on against stiff resistance from the residents of illegal constructions on the way.

The city problems could not be solved without clearing the encroachments which had almost blocked the passage of major drains and thus causing acute issues for the citizens especially during rainy season.
