Islamabad: According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 15% of Pakistanis have been a victim of verbal abuse and threats.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Following is a list of crimes.

Please tell us whether you have been the victim of any of these crimes” Responding to this, 15% said ‘verbal abuse and threats’, 14% said ‘getting wrong calls on phone’, 11% said ‘wallet/mobile snatching incidents’, 9% said ‘physical violence’, 5% said ‘any kind of fraud through the internet’, 5% said ‘any financial loss/robbery incident’, 4% said ‘jewellery theft’ and 3% said ‘sexual violence’.

Comparing results between localities, there is not much difference between urban and rural areas.

However, it is interesting to note that men are more often victims of violence like verbal abuse and threats (16%) compared to women (13%) and getting wrong calls on the phone (17%) compared to women (12%).

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International.

The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2659 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during February 18, 2013 – February 25, 2013. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 23 per cent at 95% confidence level.
