KARACHI: The newly elected President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Zubair Ahmed Malik has announced the 15-point reform agenda to elevate the image and status of the apex trade body of the country.
Addressing his maiden press conference at the Federation House on Friday, Malik said that FPCCI would coordinate with the federal government to implement and enforce accords and agreements with international trade forums and the bilateral treaties in letter and spirit.
He said that due to non-implementation of trade agreements and preferential agreements, Pakistan is not losing precious trade but getting isolated. He said that FPPCI is the representative body of 48 chambers of commerce and 96 associations in the country, so it would strive hard to bridge the gap between all such trade bodies and the government.
Malik said that prevailing economic situation is not at all satisfactory and FBR has to revise its target downward three times due to the fact and the FPPCI would create a FPCCI Parliamentarian Forum in order to apprise the government of economic reforms and revive the industrial, financial and commercial sectors.
Zubair further announced to hold frequent meetings with all chambers and associations at various public sector organizations. He said that a strong R&D Directorate is being created to enhance advocacy role towards national economic issues and policy interventions besides institutional capacity building of FPCCI through refurbishment of the existing Secretariat and induction of more capable and professional human resource.
A close liaison with international organizations like UNCTAD, UNDP, UNESCAP, WTO, WIPO and ISO would be maintained and the trade bodies would be disseminated all the relevant information. He said that industry-academia linkage is almost non-existent and FPCCI would create an effective linkage between the two by creating council of eminent personalities comprising trade and industry players, social and economic scientists, practitioners/experts, representatives of media , etc. he further announced to establish new department s including public policy, international affairs, public private liaison department, investment promotion wing, trade promotion centre, industrial productivity, etc.
Malik said that status of FPCCI representation at various public sector organizations would be reviewed and presidential trade delegations would be sent to targeted countries to explore new trade and economic opportunities and regional business policies (ECO, SAARC, CACCI, ASEAN, D-8, Europe, Americas, BRICS, etc.
He said that a strong strategy for motivating Pakistani expatriates to invest in Pakistan. Regarding MFN to India, he said that following MFN status to Pakistan, India benefited and Pakistan’s trade deficit with India has grown. He said that trade with Russia would be enhanced as present volume of $600 million is very insignificant.
For this purpose, he already held three meetings with Russian officials. He said that FPPCI has almost finalized the budget proposals for 2013-14 and would be sent to FBR soon. He vehemently declared the no unjustified tax would be accepted if imposed.
