5th National Global Compact Conference held

Peshawar: The National Global Compact Conference organised by Global Compact Network Pakistan in collaboration with Employers Federation of Pakistan and KPK Chamber of Commerce and Industry was attended by a large number of representatives from Business, Government, Academia, NGOs and civil society drawn from the capital city of the most conflict affected province of Pakistan.

KPK Governor, Eng. Shaukat ullah Khan, in his message read out to the delegates of the 5th National Global Compact Conference at Peshawar assured that Government will extend its full support to business in embracing the ten principles of UNGC as it will help business in attaining sustainability and building their capacity to contribute to peace by generating decent employment and improving quality of life.

Nawabzada Mehmud Zeb, KPK Minister for Technical Education, Manpower Training, Mines and Minerals speaking as the Chief Guest emphasised upon the need for Government Business cooperation in legislation for implementing rules of responsible business. He complimented the business in KPK for boldly confronting the hazards of terrorism and expressed the hope that they will continue to play their vibrant role in bringing peace to this conflict affected province through their responsible actions for which the UNGC principles provide tremendous opportunities.

Ahsanullah Khan, President of the Network called upon business to embrace the ten principles of UNGC also because it will enable them to pursue and practice “humanism” as the most effective tool of sustainability after the failure of capitalism, communism and socialism.

Earlier, Haji Muhammad Javed, the Conference Convener and Sr. Vice President GCNP welcoming the guests and participants of the Conference, said that despite passing through its most trying and testing times of socio economic turbulence, the business in this most conflict ridden province of Pakistan was conscious of its responsible role in bringing peace and today’s successful Conference demonstrates their unqualified readiness to respond effectively to meet the rising challenges.

Emphasised that as the Network research shows, the ten principles of UNGC are closest to Islamic values of business as their origin may be traced in the Holy Quran and teachings of our religion, Islam. These principles guide us to run business according to the rules and practices enshrined in the Quran and Sunnah and expressed the hope that business community of KPK will positively respond to the UNGC call in the same spirit.

Dr. Muhammad Yusuf Sarwar, President, KPK Chamber of Commerce &Industry explained in detail the ten principles of UNGC and said that these were natural values to strengthen business capacity to connect itself with profit and community. He assured that KPK Chamber will join the Network efforts to inspire business in KPK province to act responsibly by joining the UNGC in the larger interest of their own sustainability.

Abdullah, Ex-Chief Secretary ,KPK in his key note address termed globalisation as the new way of living together .Emphasising upon the globalization’s focus on ‘benefit of the common people’ he urged upon UNGC to build a strong edifice for business values and practices and its widest possible dissemination so that business may embrace them to get full advantage of the fruits of globalization.

Fasihul Karim Siddiqi, Secretary of the Network ,appreciated the role of business in promoting peace demonstrated by their collective effort through the Skill Development Council in which around 10,000 youth in the earthquake and flood ridden province of KPK were provided employable skills to enable them to support and rehabilitate the affected families. He called upon the business community of KPK to send a strong and positive message to the outside world not to be misled by negative propaganda and that by joining UNGC and becoming part of the global initiative, sustainable business in Pakistan provided a conducive environment for responsible investment by global investors.
