Arab League chief warns of critical situation in occupied Palestinian territories

Secretary General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit warned of further deterioration of the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories in the coming period, pointing out that the current indicators are alarming.

Aboul-Gheit called for changing the current path, saying that it does not only deprive the Palestinians of any political horizon but also puts them under unprecedented pressure, both at the political level and the daily lives of millions of residents of the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The US administration is exerting unprecedented pressure on the weakest party in this conflict, and it is not understood how such an approach could eventually lead to peace which actually distances us more from the two-state solution and leads to strengthening militancy and weakening moderation," Aboul-Gheit said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Arab League chief stressed that the explosion of the situation in Palestine will not be in the interest of any party, and that the international community bears some responsibility for preventing further deterioration of the situation. He held the US responsible for creating the state of anger and despair among Palestinians, spelling out that this situation would have serious negative consequences for stability in the region.
