KARACHI: Chairperson All Karachi Tajir Ittehad Atiq Mir said on Monday that we believed that building better relations with an enlightened and progressive nation like the United States is a benefit to Pakistan.
In a statement, he said: “For this to happen, it is necessary to establish a relationship of confidence and trust between both countries. America is the world’s dominant economic and political power. To maintain this power the government of the United States is promoting a positive image through different programs such as UNICEF, USAID, and others.”
Mir said the rivals of the United States publish diatribes describing the American policies as arrogant and inhumane and overwhelming attacks against which Muslim nations that can never hope to defend themselves. “In Pakistan these propagandists are magnifying even the smallest mistakes of American policy. As a result, in Pakistan there are harsh and negative opinions about America and the war against terrorism as it has spilled out from Afghanistan into our own nation.”
He said “This view has risen dramatically since 2010 when the US Federal Court sentenced Dr. Aafia Siddiqui to 86 years imprisonment on charges of attempted murder. Without discussing the dubious merits of this case, Dr. Siddiqui is the mother of three innocent children and the daughter of an ill mother and she deserves special sympathy and kindness from the American government.”
Mir said America was planning to implement a military withdrawal from Afghanistan in the coming year and would need to show a benevolent image to the world community to balance tales of the drones and the spying. “It is our appeal to the president of the world’s most powerful state that even if only on the basis of humanity, you send Dr. Aafia Siddiqui home.”
“She has already spent 10 years in prison. This compassionate act of mercy on the part of the United States government would be seen as a message of generosity in Pakistan. This act of humanitarianism by the American government would brighten the image of the United States and would be applauded in Pakistan,” Mir concluded.
