Center, Sindh on one page to give rangers another chance in Karachi

KARACHI: The federal and Sindh government have agreed to give rangers another chance to carry out targeted actions in Karachi with assistance of police, and also purging the police of corrupt and inefficient elements.

In this regard a special meeting of the federal cabinet was held here Wednesday at the Governor House with Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in chair. The meeting reviewed the overall law and order situation in Karachi and decided to initiate well-coordinated targeted actions in the city through police and rangers.

Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif in his address to the meeting said it seemed that the confidence of people on police has badly shaken. He said no improvement is seen in Karachi situation. Accused are arrested but later released on bail. Even the Chinese citizens are being affected due to law and order. Police in Karachi are not taking proper steps to control crime. Perhaps they are not capable to fight crime and terrorism.

He said the Sindh chief minister has said that irregularities were made in police recruitment at lower level. Employees of water board and other departments were recruited in the police. Due to recruitments in police on political and nepotism basis the department is losing confidence of citizens.

Later, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan addressing a press conference said every citizen of Pakistan is sad on Karachi situation. He said to steer Karachi from the current crisis cooperation of all stakeholders is needed.

He said actions against the criminal elements in Karachi would start in a couple of days. He said these actions would be taken by the rangers who would enjoy help of local police. The actions would be taken without any political consideration; however, it would be ensured that the innocent citizens are not harassed during these actions. He said the inspector general police Sindh and chief secretary Sindh are not being changed.

He said the federal government respects the mandate of Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and other political parties in Sindh province. He said if action is taken in Karachi by not taking the Sindh government, Governor and MQM on board it would lead to political tensions. He said the rangers would take even handed actions against the criminals, target killers, extortionists and other criminals in Karachi.

Nisar Ali Khan said the federal cabinet has also taken decisions on some sensitive matters, which would not be announced; however, people would feel the difference due to these decisions soon. He said some reservations of the director general of rangers have been removed and other issues would also be settled soon. He said a committee has been formed with Sindh chief minister as its head to review these matters almost on daily basis. He said Zahid Hamid and Farogh Naseem would be its members, while it would have representation from interior ministry, federal intelligence agencies and NADRA. He said DG Rangers, IGP Sindh and intelligence agencies officials would meet on daily basis to review the progress of decisions taken and improve better coordination. He said all policemen having contacts with criminal and terrorist elements would be arrested and sacked.

He said there are more than 4milion unregistered SIMs and he would hold an important meeting on this issue tomorrow.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah were also present.
