Conference on climate change: FUUAST has 550yearrecord of Indus River water flow: Expert

KARACHI: The Department of Botany, Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology FUUAST, Karachi has 550yearrecord of Indus River water flow, while Wapda has only 45yearrecor and it can take benefit from the varsity record.

This was stated by Prof Dr Moin Ahmed while addressing the conference on ‘Climate Change and Bio Resources’ organized by FAUST at its premises. “Water distribution is made on the basis of water flow.” He said that climate changes leave impact on every sector of life and works, including bio resources like forests and rivers. Billions of rupees are being spent on research in developed countries so as to counter troubles emerging out of climate change in the future, he informed.

Vice Chancellor FUUAST Prof Dr Zaffar Iqbal said that teachers and students could only fast develop the university by using educational and research capabilities. The administration has a great interest to resolve issues in this regard, he added.

The vice chancellor said that the climate changes are emerging rapidly but ironically no attention is being paid on those in our country, and due to this, serious issues of pollution and water could take place in the future. He said that a lot of research work is being done on such topics in developed countries.

“We have to work beyond traditional education and will have to adopt new methods of education by giving special importance to research. Iqbal said that research conferences and papers play vital role in receiving modern knowledge.

Chairman FUUAST’s Botany Department Professor Tariq Rizvi said that presently 10 students had done PhD from his department, 250 research papers have been published and six international & four national research conferences organized, while there are two modern laboratories here and students from across the country could get benefit from them. He said that scientist would have to work on the challenges emerging out of climate change and its implications.

Scientist Dr Aamirul Ibad Khan said that we would have to generate energy by using national resources so as to overcome energy crisis. “Solar energy could be generated in this regard.”

Dean Faculty of Science Professor Dr Arif Zubair said that that climate changes occur due to changes in time, so it is mandatory to be aware of them. The students should have other capabilities along with education like presenting research and describe it in correct and effective manner.
