ISLAMABAD: Soon after the Supreme Court dismissed the petition of Tehrik-e-Minhajul Quran chief Dr Tahirul Qadri seeking reconstitution of Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday, Qadri termed the verdict as political rather than constitutional.
Speaking to media persons at the Supreme Court premises after dismissal of his petition, a visibly annoyed and upset Qadri said the court did not even hear a single point of his plea and kept him engaged in irrelevant questions.
He accused the court of insulting him by calling him a ‘foreigner’. He said hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis residing abroad were remitting money back home boosting the economy and making up for people’s salaries here.
He said the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had himself taken oath from former dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf. “Somebody should tell me how taking oath from Queen Elizabeth-II is different from taking an oath from a dictator Pervez Musharraf,” he maintained.
He said his plea was not heard and irrelevant issue of his dual nationality had been come under discussion during the three day proceedings. He said constitution of the Electoral Commission of Pakistan was illegal and his stance against its constitution was right.
He complained that the apex court continued questioning him about his dual nationality for three days of the hearing rather than focusing on the main petition. He said it was on record that no hearing had been held for the appointment of ECP members.
He said the court should have called the parliamentary committee members and asked for the minutes of their meeting over the ECP’s formation. All this, he said would have proved that the constitution of the ECP was unconstitutional.
He said, “With due respect to the judiciary, I want to tell the people the truth. They did not even let me read out a single word from my petition. When I started reading it out on Tuesday, they did not listen to me, instead asked me about my dual nationality,” he maintained.
To a query, Qadri said, he became furious when the court attacked all dual nationals. He said there are millions of Pakistanis who are loyal to Pakistan and are dual nationals. He said they contribute billions of rupees to Pakistan’s economy, but even then their loyalty was being questioned here.
