Court: SC announces verdict today on presidential reference on judges’ appointment

ISLAMABAD: A five-member larger bench of Supreme Court will announce today Friday its’ reserved verdict on a reference filed by the president seeking to clarify his role in the appointment of superior courts’ judges.

The bench comprises Justice Khilji Arif Hussain, Justice Tariq Parvez, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed. In the reference, President Asif Ali Zardari had desired to seek the apex court’s opinion on the questions of law, considered by him to be of public importance, in respect of appointment of the Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts in view of the 18th and 19th Constitutional Amendments.

The reference included 13 questions for the court, was filed during the hearing of a case pertaining to appointment of Islamabad High Court judges. The president had held the notifications on the appointments of IHC judges, as recommended by a Judicial Commission JC as well as parliamentary committee, on the grounds that Justice Anwar Khan Kasi, a member of the meeting, was not as senior as the judge he was replacing on the JC.
