Court: SC seeks replies on judges’ pensions’ case

ISLAMABAD: A five member larger bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the concerned parties, petitioners and respondents, to file within a week their concise statements on the issue of pension and pensionery benefits for the retired judges of the superior courts.

The bench comprising Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, Justice Tariq Parvez, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed sought the concise statements while hearing petitions filed under Article 184 of the Constitution over the issue.

The issue involves pension and pensionery benefits for the retired judges of the superior courts from the date of their retirements, irrespective of their length of services.

The court also directed the Attorney General Irfan Qadir to assist it on the matter. The court deputed former Attorney General Makhdoom Ali Khan and advocate Salman Akram Raja as amicus curiae friend of the court in the case. Meanwhile, the court adjourned the hearing for one week.
