Deployment of divers sought to save lives in Indus River

HYDERABAD: Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad Jamal Mustafa Syed while taking serious notice of drowning cases at Al-Manzar Indus River Jamshoro, has directed Deputy Commissioner Jamshoro, Provincial Irrigation Department and other stakeholder organizations to prepare PCI for establishment of Rescue Service Centre at Al-Manzar Indus River Jamshoro on permanent basis and also take steps of immediate nature to people from drowning in Indus River.\

This he directed while presiding over a meeting regarding taking measures to save the lives from drowning in River Indus at his main office here on Tuesday. Deputy Commissioner Jamshoro Sajid Jamal Abro, SE Irrigation Abdul Qadir Palijo, XEN Sajid Ali Bhutto, officers from Health, Fisheries departments, District Police Jamshoro attended the meeting.

Addressing the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad said that since River Indus was not for the purpose of swimming and directed the Distinct Police Jamshoro for the effective deployment of police personnel with a view to restrict the visitors for going into river for swimming purpose. He asked the officers to install the warning signboards on the embankments and picnic spots as well.

The Divisional Commissioner said that apart from these steps in order to meet any eventuality of drowning incident, the Sindh Irrigation Department should hire the services of trained divers and life saving guards, besides deploying them with full equipped rescue boat at the spot of Al-Manzar in ready position where people used to come for their entertainment and take bath or go for swimming in the Indus River by violating the instructions or other means, that according to him causes the drowning incidents.

Divisional Commissioner Hyderabad also directed the officers of Health Department to establish their medical unit with a doctor and para medic, and provide necessary equipments at Al-Manzar Jamshoro, especially during the seasonal entertainment time, to ensure prompt first aid to the victims of drowning incident.

Syed also took serious notice of sand lifting from the bed of Indus River and termed it as very dangerous for the embankments. He said that the lifting of sand could affect the Topography of river bed and that could be caused of heavy pressure of water flow on the embankments.

He directed the Deputy Commissioners of Hyderabad and Jamshoro to impose 144 CrPC and prohibit the sand lifting from the river bed. He asked the officers of Irrigation Department to identify such elements involve in this trade so that action could be taken against them.
