Dharna concludes: Opposition leaders warn more protests if SC verdict not followed

Karachi: More than 20 opposition parties on the third day of their sit-in before the office of Provincial Election Commission here Monday said the Election Commission have assured voter verification process under the supervision of army; however, if this assurance was not implemented they would start a big protest movement and stage more sit-ins.

A large number of political activists attended the sit-in on its third and last day. Amongst others Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chapter Amir Muhammad Hussain Mehanti, general secretary Naseem Siddique, Saleem Zia of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz PMLN, Jam Madad Ali of Pakistan Muslim League Factional PMLF, Syed Hafeezuddin of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf PTI, Hafiz Hussain Ahmed and Maulana Ghayasuddin of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl JUIF, Sikander Khan Yousufzai of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Matloob Awan of Sunni Tehreek, Mazhar Rahoja of Awami Tehreek, Shah Owais Noorani of Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan JUP, Molana Ghulam Mustafa Farooqi of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Sami JUIS, Abdul Hameed Sheerani of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam –Noorani JUIN, Shah Muhammad Shah of Sindh United Party SUP and Dr Saleh Zahoor of Pakistan Muslim League Shere Bangal were present.

Mehanti addressing on the occasion said Karachi has been held hostage by terrorists. He said the decisions of ECP against the orders of Supreme Court of Pakistan shows the grip and influence on the elements who are afraid of free and fair pools in the city.

He claimed that no free, fair and transparent election is held in Karachi during last 25 years due to bogus voter lists and poll rigging.

He said: “We have asked chief election commissioner Fakhruddin G Ebrahim that we would not be the part of upcoming election if the ECP fails to follow the verdict of Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding re-verification of voter lists in Karachi.”

Mehanti again demanded free fair and transparent election and re-verification of voter’s list under supervision of Army. He also demanded deployment of army personnel at every polling booth on the voting day. He said that ECP had assured them that from tomorrow army personnel would accompany the ECP vote verification process.

Hafiz Hussain Ahmed said the violation of Supreme Court orders regarding voter verification process was being continued in Karachi. He said a particular party has held hostage citizens of Karachi. He was of the opinion that by not following the order of Supreme Court, ECP officers were committing contempt of court.

Shah Owais Noorani said people are being killed in Karachi, but the government not taking any firm measure.

The leaders on the occasion supported the sit-in before Parliament as announced by opposition leader in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar and thanked the PMLN for showing its concern in the matters of Karachi.
