KARACHI: JamaateIslami JI Sindh Ameer Dr MairajulHuda Siddiqui said on Tuesday that Election Commission of Pakistan ECP is the biggest hurdle in the way of transparent and fair elections.
This he said while addressing a hurriedly called press conference along with JI nominated MNAs and MPAs at IdaraeNoor Haq here on Tuesday.
Rashid Naseem, JI candidate for NA246, Syed Muhammad Bilal for NA244, Naseem Siddiqui for PS101, Hafiz NaeemurRehman for PS103, Farooq Naimatullah for PS105, Syed WajiulHasan for PS104 and others were also present on the occasion.
Dr Mairaj alleged that ECP, instead of providing facilities to voters, was creating difficulties for them. He further alleged that ECP was trying to support the former coalition partners in the government.
“Despite repeated formal and written recommendations to the officials of ECP, it has still not taken any step towards the holding of fair and free elections,” he asserted. He apprised newsmen that according to the law, a 16 Grade officer is authorised to hold the charge of presiding officer, but ECP is appointing 1 and 2 Grade employee as presiding officer affiliated with political parties.
He said that the small private schools of 60 sq yards and 120 sq yards are being made polling stations instead of government schools and those polling stations are being setup in far flung areas.
He welcomed the demand of calling army in the city during elections; whic was made by 17 religious and political parties in All Parties Conference. He feared if the demand of calling army during election is not be met, then it would be tantamount to harm the democratic process.
Talking to the media, JI leader said that ECP has transferred many polling stations in NA246, NA245 and NA244, which had been made polling stations in the past for long time.
