Fire safety training for textile, garment industries

Karachi: As many as 150 local textile and garment industries attended a series of fire safety workshops and training courses, which were offered by the Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP).

This was the first time when a series of international training courses on fire safety was organized by WRAP in Pakistan. Started from 17 December 2012 in collaboration with Accordia Global Compliance Group, the last training session was held in a local hotel, which was largely attended by local textile, garments, spinning and yarn manufacturing industries.

Earlier training sessions were held in both Karachi and Lahore in collaboration with SITE Association Karachi, Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association (PRGMEA) and Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association (PHMA). Saifullah Khawaja, Director of WRAP’s Bangladesh Liaison Office, was the lead trainer in the course.

Addressing the crucial industrial needs of fire safety and risk assessment within local industries, the courses covered issues related with fire safety & protection, fire spread & combustion, routine fire prevention measures, effective response during fire, risk assessment, coupled with workable models of evacuation, including fire drills and pre-planning etc.

Besides ‘international expertise with local experience’, the course also focused on fire safety laws in Pakistan, and conducted firefighting sessions. Tailored to the specific risks and fire safety legislation in Pakistan, WRAP’s international fire safety courses also introduced an internationally-practiced ‘5 Steps Risk Assessment Process’.

Belonging to the leading textile, apparel and garment industries, the participants were informed that within a factory premises, it’s everyone’s responsibility to be aware of do’s and don’ts of fire safety, and assuming that someone else would come to extinguish the fire is a big no-no in industrial setups.

Doing the assessment too late, or tackling the fire without doing homework is one of 7 deadly sins in the workplace, and companies must utilize maximum resources for translating the assessment into a safe system of work. “A fire risk assessment is an organised and methodical look at factory premises, as there is always a likelihood that a fire could start and cause harm to those in and around the premises”, Khawaja explained.

WRAP’s President & CEO Avedis Seferian, and Richard Ingrao CEO Accordia Global Compliance (AGC) also addressed in the sessions through webinar arrangements. In the end, Inam al Rehman Country Head Accordia Global Compliance Group Pakistan drew attention to the need of following modern fire safety trends and methods in the local industries.
