Giant killer Saqib falls in Barcelona quarters

Karachi: After brushing aside favourite Oliver Pett of England in quarters, Pakistani qualifier Muhammad Saqib Yousuf finally bowed out of Club Esportiu Rocafort XV Open after losing semifinal match to third seeded German Jens Schoor in Barcelona, Spain.

Lahore based Saqib recovered from 12 down to beat top seed Pett by 711, 117, 211, 112, 119 score in 69 minutes to secure an unexpected berth in semifinals.

Ranked at 117th in the international circuit, Saqib had also defeated higher ranked opponent Aqeel Rehman of Austria in the first round.

However, Schoor stopped Saqib from his giant killing run in the pre-finals, recording an 118, 711, 115, 116 victory in 41 minutes.

After beating Saqib, Schoor went on to beat second seeded compatriot Raphael Kandra in the final by 115, 711, 511, 116, 1210 score in marathon 91minute encounter to claim the title of the event.
