I-11 Katchi abadi dwellers repel eviction drive

Islamabad: Hundreds of katchi abadi dwellers settled at sector I-11/1 near Pirwadhai repelled an eviction drive by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Thursday. They warned that continue to resist all such illegal attempts in future also.

A large contingent led by CDA Director Encroachment featuring dozens of police personnel along with bulldozers and tractors arrived at the Abadi on Thursday morning and threatened to conduct an operation through the course of the day but eventually retreated when faced with substantial resistance by the local residents.

This is the third time that such an operation has been attempted over the past few weeks. Activists of the Awami Workers Party (AWP) present on the occasion slammed the CDA and local administration for attempting to evict local residents despite the fact that the latter possess a stay order from the district
courts until March 3rd.

Speaking on the occasion AWP leader Nazish Zahoor said that the CDA has completely turned a blind eye to the innumerable rich and powerful residents of Islamabad who regularly violate the capital’s by-laws and engage in all sorts of illegal practices while it refuses to acknowledge the legal right of the working masses to shelter.
