KCCI for bettering Pak image abroad

Karachi: Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s President Muhammad Haroon Agar has asserted upon the need to depict real image of Pakistan with all its strength and spurn the negative perception of Pakistan being portrayed by some foreign media.

Exchanging views with Jennifer Harbison, British Independent South Asia Political Risk Analyst & Consultant during her visit to KCCI, President KCCI stated that negative propaganda of Pakistan as a country having unrest and deteriorating law and order situation has tarnished its real image and affected the commerce. Perception shown in the western media was unfair which need to be corrected in the eyes of countries around the globe, he maintained.

He also emphasized to bridge the trust deficit with countries worldwide through trade. He stated that many multinational corporations were successfully operating in Pakistan since last many decades and not a single company was closed down, hence, more foreign companies should come and invest in Pakistan and capture the markets of three regional trading blocs viz. SAARC, ECO, Central Asian Republics whereby Pakistan is geostrategically located in the centre. He invited the investors to invest in energy sector and alternate energy solutions.

Stressing upon the SAARC Economic Integration, he said that fostering the process of regional trade, Indo-Pak economic cooperation and trade liberalization will bring peace and prosperity in the region. On Indo-Pak bilateral trade relations, he opined that both countries will have to demonstrate same greater political will to foster relations as shown in negotiations during last two years, he maintained.

He hoped that “negative list” will be dismantled before the end of year 2012 and Pakistan will accord MFN status to India as well. He apprised that KCCI recently organized two Indian Single Country Exhibitions with Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council of India and Federation of Indian Export Organizations FIEO. A business delegation from Confederation of Indian Industry CII also visited KCCI for business networking. He informed that one complete hall for Indian and International Pavilion is also planned in KCCI’s 10th MyKarachi Exhibition to be organized from 5~7 July, 2013 and he also intent to take a business delegation to India this year.

Jennifer Harbison apprised that she frequently visits Pakistan to have an insight on political and economic affairs. She informed that it was an information seeking visit to KCCI on Indo-Pak trade liberalization and recent development on South Asia trade.

She said that being frequent visitor to Pakistan she found Pakistan and its people very hospitable. She appreciated the role of KCCI in socioeconomic development of Pakistan and to enhance trade with friendly countries. She told that being analyst on political risk consulting on South Asia, with particular expertise in assessing the political, operational and security risk environment for investors in Pakistan and India, she delivers actionable analysis as per client’s requirement particularly in the sectors of mining, telecom, textiles and pharmaceuticals.

She said London’s media has appreciated Pakistan’s Commerce Ministry’s initiative for comprehensive insurance coverage of businesspersons visiting Pakistan for commerce purpose during their stay. She sought KCCI President’s views on Indo-Pak trade liberalization and Pakistan government’s support on trade with India, concerns of business community on supply chain solutions, quality and delivery of consignments.
