KARACHI: Karachi Water and Sewerage Board KWSB and China International Water & Electric Corporation CWE signed an MoU for cooperation in Greater Karachi Water Supply Project KIV, here on Thursday at KWSB Chairman Secretariat in the presence of Secretary Local Government Ali Mohammad Lund.
Li Zhilli, General Manager, CWE Pakistan and Managing Director KWSB Misbahuddin Farid singed the MoU. Ms Dong Wenting Assistant General Manger CWE, Gao Rui Chief Accountant CWE Pakistan, Zhu Bao, all KWSB deputy managing directors, chief engineers and other officers were also present.
MoU between KWSB and CWE is signed after several meetings. The discussions led after CWE recently displayed interest in Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme KIV. In this regard, a delegation led by Li Zhilli and Yan Xinde met Managing Director KWSB, Deputy Managing Director Planning Mashkoorul Hassan and Chief Engineer KIV Project Saleem Ahmed Siddiqui and briefed them about other CWE projects in Pakistan and their interest in water supply project in several meetings after which details of cooperation were discussed leading to the MOU signing.
MD KWSB briefed media personnel and stated that development work on Greater Karachi Water and Supply Project KIV has been initiated after ECNEC and government approval. He said that with the completion of this project, Karachi would be self-sufficient in water supply for next 20 years with 1200 cusecs of additional supply and 400 million gallons daily supply.
He said that the project is important not only for Karachi but also for Pakistan’s economy and it would bring positive change in industrial, trade and business activities as well as environment.
MD KWSB further brief that under this MoU, CWE would help KWSB acquire soft loan at 1% interest from China, however, this is subject to Chinese government and Government of Sindh approval. CWE would commence their work in 90 days.
Speaking on the occasion, Zhilli of CWE stated that CWE is a large state owned enterprise which is one of the few key Chinese enterprises specializing in international construction, mainly in the areas of infrastructure, including road and bridge, irrigation, hydropower, electrical engineering and housing etc.
He said that CWE has been active in Pakistan since 1980 with 23 successfully completed projects. Whereas currently, several projects are underway, including Mangla Dam Rising Project Resettlement Works, Pakistan Karachi Port Dredging and Reclamation Project, Khanewal ProjectM4, Package 1 , Rehabilitation of Upper and Lower Nara Canal, Rehabilitation of Makhi Complex, and Khipro Canal with total contract value over US dollar 800 million.
Thanking KWSB, he further explained that water supply project is in their top most priorities. Lastly MD KWSB thanked media personnel present on the occasion and said that KIV is largest project in South Asia region and it is an important milestone in the development of the economic backbone of Karachi city and in term of our homeland Pakistan.
