Jhuddo, Sindh: The lower Sindh, especially the areas falling at the tail end of Mithrao and Jamrao canals, are facing acute shortage of water for irrigation and drinking purpose, as the water release has been delayed after annual closure of canals for desilting in winter season.
The water releases to the canals are generally closed for 15 days during January but this year no water has been released even after a month at the start of February.
Six union councils – Jhuddo, Roshanabad, Naukot, Fazal Bhambhro, Aahori and Dilawar Hussain are the worst affected where the people of towns and villages are also supplied water from these two canals.
The growers of these areas are also worried as their standing crops of wheat, sunflower, onion, potato and other crops are drying up due to nonavailability of water in the canals. They feared huge financial losses if the water for irrigation purpose was not released immediately.
