Minister asked action against illegal hydrants

Karachi: Sindh Minister for Local Government Sharjeel Inam Memon has expressed his displeasure over water theft and a hug shortfall on account of recovery of bills faced by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and has directed senior officials to take strict action against business of illegal hydrants and assured them that help of Police and Rangers personnel will also be provided to break the vicious circle.

He was presiding over a meeting of senior officials of Local Government Department today at his office which was attended among others by the Secretary Local Government Department and MD Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.

The Minister was informed that the KWSB at present is facing shortfall of Rs. 250 million every month on account of billing as people in many localities do not pay their bills on regular basis. The Minster directed the officials to take all out efforts to improve recovery position.

The Minister was briefed on salient features of the sewerage treatment plant called S III and impact thereof on mitigating environmental pollution in the Metropolis. He directed that work on the project must be started within 20 days next failing which serious action shall be initiated against the concerned officials.

The Minister directed the MD KWSB to visit Dhabeji Pumping Station today and assess the situation and take necessary measures with a view to ensure supply of drinking water supply to the Metropolis without any interruption.
