KARACHI: Pasban Pakistan President Altaf Shakoor here Tuesday welcomed the government decision to try dictator Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan and demanded that he should also be tried for selling our innocent Pakistanis.
In a statement, he said it was a good omen that the government had decided to try the dictator for treason. “The only way to uphold the rule of law is to take strict action against the elements who violated the Constitution of Pakistan.”
He said lawbreakers should be made accountable before the courts irrespective of their status. He said the nine-year rule of Musharraf saw grave violations of Constitution continuously. Shakoor said: “Musharraf not only toppled an elected democratic government but also ordered Lal Masjid operation, allowed drone attacks and NATO supply, handed over Pakistani territories to Americans and he was also behind the kidnapping of Dr Aafia Siddiqui and handing her over to foreigners.”
He also endured May 12 mayhem in Karachi. Shakoor said the accountability of the dictator was necessary. He asked under which law the dictator had kidnapped Pakistani citizen Dr Aafia and handed her over to Americans. He said like the emergency of November 3, the kidnapping of Aafia was also a violation of the constitution. He said providing protection to citizens is the prime responsibility of government.
He appealed to the judiciary to take notice of all these grave crimes of the dictator and punish him as per law of land. He demanded of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif to order filing of a case against Musharraf for kidnapping of Dr Aafia and handing her over to Americans.
